Unlike many other emerging economies, South Korea now has an established track record in academic technology transfer. Indeed, many well-known university professors and/or national institute researchers in South Korea have founded their own biotech startups. The nation's science base has been particularly strong in areas, such as genomics, array technology, somatic cell nuclear transfer, regenerative medicine, artificial organs and transgenic animals.
Approximately 600 companies make up Korea's biotechnology industry, and more than 300 are located in the capital area. The industry, however, is moving toward geographic diversification thanks to government policies that nurture bio-clusters throughout the country. Thus, the collaboration with the life science cluster in Seoul is a good gateway to the entire South Korean life science industry.
